Scottie Piersel: Sandblasted Pencil Shank Apple with Ivorite Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-786-0121

Scottie Piersel's pipe-making career was born out of a loving gesture, when, in an effort to make a gift for her husband, she purchased a pipe making kit, intent on carving one especially for him. Once she had finished that first pipe she soon realized that she had an intense passion for the art of briar carving, continuing to craft pipes with guidance from internet resources as well as Kansas City based craftsmen George Dibos and Quinton Wells. Piersel values traditional aesthetics, and, most importantly and in her own words, "clean lines, perfect proportions and flawless drilling," all of which can be found in this straight Apple rendition.

As with many of Piersel's pipes, the most arresting feature of this piece is the lengthy pencil shank that stretches out of its cheeked transition, a signature feature of much of Scottie's work. This not only makes the pipe much lighter, but it doesn't come at the cost of structural integrity, as it has been bolstered with a stainless steel tube to promote strength, rigidity, and serve as a reverse tenon for the swirling, olive and aqua stem. Said stem features a dramatic horizontal flare from the bit to the button, acting in concert with the stem base's trim band of Ivorite to bring some attention to the rear of the composition, allowing the eye to more easily appreciate the sleek length of the shank-and-stem combination.

The bowl, of course, carries much of the visual weight of this piece, with gentle, fluid curves making up its walls and leading to the rim which is finished smooth and slanted forward, imbuing the pipe with a sense of dynamism and an easy momentum which keeps the look of the pipe quite interesting. The rest of the stummel, in contrast, has been treated with a low-depth sandblast that reveals tight undulations of vertical growth rings on the fore and aft of the bowl, while dense swathes of blasted birdseye cover the flanks. All of the briar is covered in a deep, auburn stain which offsets the vibrancy of the shank end adornment and stem, cultivating a look that is both modern and timeless.
