While Scottie Piersel crafts a variety of classic forms, it's her unique, pencil-shanked designs that most often appear in her portfolio, and it's self-evident why: they are, like all of her pipes, meticulously engineered and visually striking, playing with both proportion and expectation. Such is the case with this Tomato, which measures over ten inches long, a feat Piersel accomplishes by lining her incredibly lithe shanks with stainless steel. The added durability the steel affords the shank also enables the slim stretch of briar the ability to support a comparatively large bowl. Here, the bowl is that of a wide, stout Tomato, its broad frame suspended at the fore of a streamlined shank-and-stem arrangement. Dressing this piece is a crisp, smoldering sandblast that highlights healthy grain throughout the stummel.
