Ser Jacopo: 40th Anniversary Historica Sandblasted Calabash with Silver Cap (S2) (50) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-171-3495
Pioneering the Pesaro school of design, Ser Jacopo's work usually consists of pipes that are playfully and dramatically stylized, their looks immediately evocative of the powerful imagination and whimsy that went into crafting them. Their Historica line, though it hearkens back to older, more classic profiles, is still quite striking, as it takes these more subdued pieces and modernizes them, redefining them with modifications that include handsome silver work. For the workshop's 40th anniversary, Ser Jacopo has created this eye-catching Calabash in celebration, offering it in a variety of finishes, each with a broad, domed, rim cap of silver for an added dose of refined flash.
This is quite the refined piece from the Ser Jacopo workshop, offering a playful aesthetic while simultaneously exuding an air of poised elegance. There is a lot to say about the use of negative space here, especially with regards to the sweeping transition, one given a bit more room to flow thanks to the shank's pinch toward the middle. Not only this, but it also ensures that the visual weight is placed more so on the transition itself despite the bowl's size, simply by nature of the eye's draw to a vacuum. A wide stem with a sizeable base nestles into the shank face thanks to a slight divot in the briar, and the face itself is carved into an undulating wave that keeps the rear end dynamic. The proud bowl sits atop a pronounced, spurred heel that sweeps upward at the fore end of the pipe, providing a lovely spot for the fingers to wrap around, and a slight flare to the rim ends with the aforementioned silver cap, not only introducing an extra dash of refinement to the composition, but contrasting the finish of the stummel wonderfully. The aft end of the shank is left smooth and stained a light, honey hue that reveals some lovely flame grain, while the rest of the stummel is dressed in a warm auburn stain and given a low-depth sandblast, revealing growth rings that climb up the bowl's exterior.-John McElheny
