Ser Jacopo: Spongia Rusticated Billiard (R2) (D) (Maxima, Maxima, Maxima, Maxima) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-171-3771
Generally speaking, Ser Jacopo crafts pipes that are a good deal bigger than many of their contemporaries, but its largest examples come marked with the "Maxima" stamp, adding more of these as the size of the pipe increases. This Billiard comes with four, bespeaking its length of over eight and a half inches and its height of more than three, its half a pound of briar providing an extremely substantial presence in hand. The most immediately striking element of this piece, outside of its massive proportions, is the aerodynamic sense of line that possesses the shaping, with the bowl slanting rearward sharply. This interacts with the continuous taper of the shank and stem combination and the jutting heel to create a profile that looks as if it could slice through air with little resistance. Reminiscent of Castello's famed "55" shape, this protruding, chin-like heel brings the eyes forward, and is actually the most forward part of this pipe, especially when sat sturdily on its flattened underside. Dressed in a warm, natural rustication, there's plenty of texture to appreciate here, with the smooth rim showcasing some grain and adding contrast, as well as the briar extension of the stem's base.-John McElheny
