Staying true to Ser Jacopo's Pesaro shaping style, and playful sense of design, this Calabash alters the classic profile by tempering the flare of the bowl's walls and exaggerating the presence of the iconic mushroom-cap rim. More arresting than this, however, is the sinuously curved stretch of consistently tapering shank and stem which lilt away out back: the combination thrust into visual prominence by its square paneling. Said paneled arrangement pulls a good deal of the visual weight away from the bowl, yet this piece maintains its neoclassical sense of proportion thanks to the rim cap's expressive expansion. A hearty handful of briar, the stummel here has been dressed in a rich, dark, chestnut-hued stain that reveals a wealth of handsome grain throughout its surfaces.
