Ser Jacopo: Domina 2023 Smooth Tomato with Silver (L1) (D) (11) Tobacco Pipe

An annually released limited edition series, Ser Jacopo's Domina line comprises a single shape across various finishes, with the shape itself varied every year. The line has become something of a tradition, with a new iteration having been produced each year since 1996, every one distinct from the ones that have preceded it. For instance, the shape made for 2022 was a unique take on the bent apple. For 2023, however, the Italian workshop has presented us with this gently sinuous take on the Tomato, one which comes complete with a stylish silver band engraved with the year and the name of the series.

Compared to many other shapes made by the Italian workshop, this profile exudes an air of classical affability, with a softly lifted stretch of shank and stem that curves gesturally out back. This pair ebbs out of a wide transition that leaves plenty of room to drape a digit, the combination offering a comfortable smoking posture with plenty of potential for clenching. The shank itself is a wide, ovoid stretch of briar that takes on a sleek taper to the end, this taper continued through the stem nearly uninterrupted because of the implied lines that continue through the slightly indented silver band. A pair of ridgelines frame the flanks of the shank, dissipating as they approach the bowl and adding some welcome structure to this composition. At the fore, the bowl is supported by a lifted heel, the underside of the stummel pushing out just a bit and emphasizing the charming rotundity of the bowls' contours. A low-set waistline and easy taper to the rim lend a comfortable fit in hand, while the sizeable canvas of the bowl gives plenty of space to showcase the warm chestnut stain dressing the stummel, revealing a wealth of handsome grain.
