Silver Gray: Sandblasted Captain's Hawkbill
Product Number: 002-775-0056
The Hawkbill is often thought to be inherent to Italian pipe making for the most part, with the shape especially gaining prominence when the Castello workshop began crafting the design decades ago. Certainly, other workshops and artisans have fashioned the playful shape, with Hawkbill renditions from Silver Gray being well represented within her portfolio.
Shape-wise, this pocket-friendly Captain's Hawkbill is a much more refined, scaled-down piece than some examples, especially those rendered from Italian pipe makers. The bulbous, rounded bowl tapers toward the rim from a plump base that comprises rugged plateau, while the characteristic aquiline curve of the shank is diamond-shaped and framed by the artisan's crisp line work. It's all dressed in a rustic, smoky, contrast-stained sandblast that exposes the briar's natural grain, with the rim smoothly polished a lighter hue. An abbreviated, but proportional stem of tan and black brindled vulcanite tops things off in this lively pipe emblazoned with the carver's logo of a heart-shaped fox head.-Angela Robertson
