Lasse Skovgaard: Smooth Asymmetric Calabash (Lion) Tobacco Pipe

While we've seen the underlying form presented by this Calabash various times from Lasse Skovgaard, the number of Calabash renditions we've seen from the artisan is rather rare, and only two of those have been his coveted "Lion" grade. This piece is definitely deserving of the stamp, as it sports finely-stranded licks of flame in abundance, perfectly oriented with birdseye above and below. What draws my attention, though, is the shaping: with the exception of the rim, the form itself is smoothly symmetrical. The oval-shaped cap sports a smooth, undulating lip around the equator, offering a natural divot for the hand to maintain a snug grip, and instantly evoking the look of a rather fantastic toadstool growing out of a log in some Lewis Carroll-inspired forest.
