Lasse Skovgaard: Smooth Bent Brandy
Product Number: 002-327-0624
Lasse Skovgaard entered the pipemaking world like many Danish artisans before him: working for W.Ø. Larsen. He started when he was 18, making buffalo horn tampers but soon transitioned into carving the workshop's beautiful straight-grain pieces. Receiving further instruction from his father, Benni Jorgensen, and Teddy Knudsen, Lasse progressed rapidly and now offers stunning pipes under his own name. Presented here is a classically inclined bent Brandy, full of the soft curves and plump roundness often associated with the Danish aesthetic. This piece pairs a voluptuous bowl with an equally robust shank for a rather substantial presence in profile, the defined transition further accentuating the lower bowl's plumpness. The slight forward cant balances out the shank and stem's sinuous flow, while the chamfered rim and flaring stem base offer the only hard lines in profile and an elegant disposition all around. Covered in gorgeous flame grain, it's an eye-catching piece, unadorned to afford the briar's natural patterns all the attention.-Truett Smith
