Lasse Skovgaard: Sandblasted Volcano
Product Number: 002-327-0634
Though we've received a few dozen Volcano renditions from Lasse Skovgaard in the past, it's been over four years since we last saw the Danish carver take on the shape. Unlike most renditions that are typically solid and static, Skovgaard's are inherently active and gestural in their execution. This particular offering displays a strong degree of implied momentum, the bowl seemingly being carried along with the current of the undulating base or in this case flowing lava. A pair of firm ridgelines emanate from out of the shank face, continuing along the sides of the shank before eventually merging and wrapping around the lower fore of the canted bowl. The rim is notably concave in orientation, its wavy disposition matching the sweeping shank perfectly. Underneath, the base is slightly rounded, yet this piece is able to sit stably on flat surfaces after some initial rocking back and forth. Finish-wise, Lasse has treated the stummel to a low-profile sandblast, unveiling a mesmerizing display of wavy ring grain that cascades down the bowl. The stem base flares outward, its disc-like shaping further contributing to the striking profile while the rim and shank end have been left smooth for a hint of contrast.- Jeffery Sitts
