Lasse Skovgaard: Smooth Acorn
Product Number: 002-327-0636
Following the tradition of many Danish artisans, Lasse Skovgaard began his pipemaking career with W.Ø. Larsen, eventually joining the likes of Teddy Knudsen and Jess Chonowitsch as one of the carvers to fashion the workshop's prestigious straight-grain pipes. Lasse later moved on to carve his own pipes and even shared a workshop with Knudsen, a family friend of Skovgaard and his father, Benni Jorgensen. As a pipemaker, Lasse leans into classic Danish design, from striking Freehands to more reserved forms. The Acorn is one of his most prolific shapes, and one such example is found here. Instead of Lasse's signature Acorn renditions, this piece features a more defined transition, visually separating the bulbous bowl from the shank. Said shank is subtly shaped into a teardrop in cross section, with the resulting ridgeline running down the left flank and halting at the transition. The curve through the heel and underside is consistently arched, and the flare of the shank toward the stem echoes that of the bowl, though the latter is more rounded at the rim to soften the form. Last but certainly not least, the grain orientation here is stunning and worthy of admiration — cross grain separating flanks studded with whorls of birdseye.-Truett Smith
