Lasse Skovgaard: Sandblasted Billiard

Product Number: 002-327-0645

Lasse Skovgaard, the son of famous pipemaker Benni Jorgensen, began his career in pipes by making the highly popular W.Ø Larsen tampers in that workshop when he was 18. Learning his initial pipemaking skills from his father and from Teddy Knudsen, with whom he shared a workshop for a time, Lasse struck out on his own with some of the most graceful and elegant pipes seen, like this wonderful Billiard.

The bowl has a Brandy-esque taper, which is a well-used Danish carving tradition, which provides an impression of quite a firm heel. Perfect symmetry abounds as the bowl tapers to the smooth, almost subliminally rounded rim. The shank is a perfect cylinder with no taper or reduction as it approaches the stem, a feature I particularly appreciate. The grain is well-pronounced by the medium-shallow sandblast, aligned horizontally in spectacular ring grain orientation. The finish is a light brown with reddish tones, highlighted by a lighter treatment of the high spots in the texture for some added three-dimensionality. Long, slender and traditional, with Lasse's own creative impulses informing its shape, this is a pipe for those who appreciate Danish styling in classic shapes.
