Lasse Skovgaard: Sandblasted Bent Apple
Product Number: 002-327-0647
This trim, lengthy style of bent Apple is one we haven't seen much of from Lasse Skovgaard, the Danish carver often favoring sinuous S-curves and plump bowls. It's an impressively lightweight design at only 34 grams, demonstrating Lasse's keen eye for balance and proportions. The shank is quite lengthy, simultaneously flaring outward toward the mortise and subtly tapering near the pinched transition. Two ridgelines emerge from the underside of the shank face and inform much of this piece's shaping. The left ridgeline is noticeably firmer and more pronounced, working in tandem with the right ridgeline to accentuate the bowl's chubbiness and giving the heel its lifted disposition. They create cheeking around the transition and seamlessly dissolve into the shaping of the bowl. The Danish carver has then finished this piece in a light-depth sandblast, managing to coax out some pleasing texture while still preserving the shape's precise line work. To contrast, the shank face and nomenclature have been left smooth, stained a smoky walnut hue that complements the dark stain of the sandblast quite nicely. It's a charmingly understated design from Lasse and one that will only enhance any collection it joins.- Jeffery Sitts
