Lasse Skovgaard: Smooth Acorn
Product Number: 002-327-0652
Lasse Skovgaard entered the world of pipemaking when he was 18, working for W.Ø. Larsen. He started out fashioning tampers from buffalo horn before transitioning into carving the workshop's esteemed straight-grain pieces. He developed quickly with Larsen, also receiving instruction from Teddy Knudsen and his father, Benni Jorgensen, and now Lasse makes quality smoking instruments under his own name. One such piece is presented here. Though featuring the same high-waisted bowl and rounded rim, this rendition is a departure from his signature take on the shape, forgoing the taller style of bowl, elongated shank, and taper toward the stem.
Most notable in this iteration is Lasse's shaping of the shank end, which riffs off of early Danish design cues, often seen in '60s- and '70s-era pipes and in particular the work of Teddy Knudsen. The shank flares dramatically outward at the end and is topped by a rounded face that matches the plump expansion ring at the stem base. While the motif is a rather common one, Skovgaard has added some asymmetry, dropping the right side's flare more drastically and further pronouncing that side's domed shaping, as well as curling each flank more dramatically. It's a creative and modern application of an old aesthetic, and one that suits this shape well — the shaping of the shank end matching the bowl's flare and rounded rim.-Truett Smith
