Lasse Skovgaard: Smooth Bent Apple
Product Number: 002-327-0663
Lasse Skovgaard has had quite the remarkable pipe making career ever since he started at W.Ø. Larsen when he was just 18 years old. Early on, he was responsible for fashioning tampers from buffalo horn before transitioning into carving the workshop's esteemed straight-grain pieces. His skills developed rapidly at Larsen, with Lasse learning from the legendary Teddy Knudsen as well as his father, Benni Jorgensen. Skovgaard now fashions exquisite smoking instruments under his own name, with this bent Apple being another excellent addition to his portfolio.
This piece maintains the Danish carver's penchant for supple curves and elegant line work, with the robust bowl perched on the end of the sweeping shank. The shank is compressed along its sides, an aspect that's most readily apparent when this piece is viewed from above, with a pair of subtle ridgelines blending into the bowl's shaping. Those ridgelines accentuate the bowl's chubby disposition, creating cheeking at the transition. The bowl offers a substantial presence in hand and is surrounded by striking grain with streaks of vertical grain cascading down the bowl's flanks, with whorls of birdseye dominating the entire underside. It's simply a stunning piece from Lasse, its sublime shaping and gorgeous grain culminating in a pipe that promises years of enjoyment.- Jeffery Sitts
