Lasse Skovgaard: Smooth Billiard
Product Number: 002-327-0670
Lasse Skovgaard entered the world of pipe making when he was 18, working for W.Ø. Larsen. He started out fashioning tampers from buffalo horn before transitioning into carving the workshop's esteemed straight-grain pieces. He developed quickly with Larsen, also receiving instruction from Teddy Knudsen and his father, Benni Jorgensen, and now Lasse makes quality smoking instruments under his own name, like this saddle-stemmed Billiard.
The bowl rises tall and proud from the subdued shank, subtly tapering from its plump base up toward the rim. Said shank maintains its cylindrical shaping without tapering or reducing in diameter as it meets the saddle stem which continues arrow-straight toward the comfortable lip button. While this piece is remarkably compact in terms of length, the bowl and tobacco leave nothing to be desired and promise long smoking sessions. A beautiful array of flame grain envelopes the bowl's flanks, with the vibrant contrast stain adding extra definition to each individual tendril. If you're drawn to artisan interpretations of shape chart standards, Lasse Skovgaard's work is always admirable.- Jeffery Sitts
