Lasse Skovgaard: Smooth Apple
Product Number: 002-327-0677
Lasse Skovgaard, the son of renowned pipe maker Benni Jorgensen, started his pipe making career by crafting the popular W.Ø. Larsen horn tampers when he was 18. Learning his initial pipe making skills from his father and from Teddy Knudsen, with whom he shared a workshop for a time, Skovgaard struck out on his own to create some of the most graceful and elegant pipes seen, like this beautiful Apple. Particularly notable is that Lasse doesn't often craft many straight pipes, often favoring sinuously bent and sweeping designs, which makes this piece a rare, yet welcome sight.
The bowl is affably rounded and incredibly inviting in hand, subtly tapering from its bulging flanks up toward the rim which then gently slopes inward to meet the capacious tobacco chamber. The robust, cylindrical shank supports the bowl's plumpness, creating cheeking around the transition while also complementing the bowl's heartiness. The use of saddle stem on this piece was certainly an excellent choice, utilizing negative space to redirect attention to the stummel. And with all the lively, gorgeous flame grain on display, the bowl certainly deserves that attention with one of the Danish artisan's vibrant contrast stains adding definition to each individual streak that wraps around the bowl's flanks. It's a tempting piece to add to a collection, especially if you admire artisan renditions of classic shapes.- Jeffery Sitts
