Lasse Skovgaard: Smooth Bent Dublin
Product Number: 002-327-0680
Danish pipe design is often characterized by flowing lines, soft curves, and a certain elegance. Artisan carvers and workshops from Denmark have long curated this style over the decades, beginning most notably with Sixten Ivarsson and continuing through others like Jess Chonowitsch, Teddy Knudsen, Kent Rasmussen, Lars and Nanna Ivarsson, and many others. A number of these artisans also worked for various Danish workshops, W.Ø. Larsen in particular, which featured prestigious Straight Grain pipes carved by individual artisans.
Lasse Skovgaard began his pipe making career with Larsen, and eventually became one of these artisans for the workshop before embarking on his solo pipe making career. Having received instruction from both his father, Benni Jorgensen, and family friend Teddy Knudsen, along with his time at W.Ø. Larsen, Lasse is a talented and experienced carver whose work exudes Danish design cues and quality construction all around. Here, Skovgaard presents an especially fluid bent Dublin. The profile is marked by a sinuous gesture through the stem and shank, the transition curling effortlessly and flaring gradually into the bowl with almost Horn-like gentility. Such a design is perfect for choice grain orientation too, which Lasse has highlighted in a vivid stain — cross grain streaking the flanks, in accordance with the bowl's flare, to leave pinpricks of birdseye fore and aft.-Truett Smith
