Lasse Skovgaard: Sandblasted Bent Dublin

Product Number: 002-327-0684

Lasse Skovgaard has had quite the remarkable pipe-making career ever since he started at W.Ø. Larsen when he was just 18 years old. Early on, he was responsible for fashioning tampers from buffalo horn before transitioning into carving the workshop's esteemed straight-grain pieces. His skills developed rapidly at Larsen, with Lasse learning from the legendary Teddy Knudsen as well as his father, Benni Jørgensen. Skovgaard now fashions exquisite smoking instruments under his own name, with this bent Dublin being another excellent addition to his portfolio.

Much as in the case of Lasse's two most important mentors, Benni Jørgensen and Teddy Knudsen, the bent Dublin shape is one of the most central forms in the young Dane's repertoire. This pipe has many of Lasse's conventional identifiers: excellent symmetry, an inflated rim, a deftly executed sandblast, and a gracefully arching shank-and-stem combination. The grain orientation follows the bowl's shaping wonderfully, with undulating patterns of grain rising in concert with the bowl's characteristic flare. The finish is a warm, ruddy hue, highlighted by a lighter treatment of the high spots in the texture for some added three-dimensionality. For subtle textural contrast, the innermost portion of the rim is smooth and precisely chamfered, sloping inward toward the chamber. I particularly admire the shank as it's somewhat wide, but not excessive in its breadth, and the way it curves elegantly upward to meet the saddle stem. This is a tempting piece to add to a collection, especially if you admire artisan renditions of classic shapes.
