Lasse Skovgaard: Sandblasted Bent Egg with Horn
Product Number: 002-327-0705
As Lasse Skovgaard approaches two decades of pipe making experience, his place in the Danish pipe making tradition becomes more important and his style is clearly recognizable as his own. The son of Benni Jørgensen, Lasse began making pipes at the age of 18 in the W.Ø. Larsen workshop, and learned quickly from his father and other master carvers like Teddy Knudsen. After earning the honored role of crafting Straight Grain pipes for W.Ø. Larsen, Skovgaard began stamping pipes with his own name, and now produces fine pieces replete with Danish design cues, such as this supple bent Egg rendition.
A gently rounded Egg bowl perches at the end of a subtly lenticular shank, with distinct cheeking and a crisp transition demarcating the two. The shank's shape makes for excellent thumb draping, and also allows easy indexing of the pipe in several hand positions. The rim undulates slightly and leans back, giving the pipe a sense of implied momentum, while the svelte vulcanite saddle stem turns down just the right amount for a comfortable smoking posture. Its dressed in a smoky two-tone sandblasted finish that accentuates excellent blasted birdseye on the flanks and rippling cross grain on the fore and aft, while an accent of pale horn adds elegant contrast at the shank end.- Joel Balyeat
