Lasse Skovgaard: Sandblasted Freehand
Product Number: 002-327-0707
A beguiling Freehand created by W.Ø. Larsen alum Lasse Skovgaard, this pipe is emblematic of the Danish carver's artistic talents realized from years of crafting high-quality, well-engineered pipes. Skovgaard's interest in smoking instruments was piqued at 18, when he went to work for Larsen making tampers from buffalo horn. Quickly progressing to crafting pipes, he learned much from his father Benni Jorgensen and others, including Teddy Knudsen. It wasn't long before he became known more broadly to the pipe community and has been adding interpretations of classic shapes and more eccentric examples since, with this Freehand being a fine example of the latter.
The forward-urging bowl displays elements of the bent Dublin and Cobra shapes with a pronounced flare toward the broad, sloping rim, which certainly catches the eye. Softly inflated and bracketed on both flanks by rolling, demarcating ridgelines that descend along the fore, forming a panel, this piece presents a hood-like effect. A sweeping heel and tucked transition then swing upward, the shank curling to meet the stylish, elongated mouthpiece. A broad, smooth accenting dome of jet-black at the shank end advances seamlessly to the gently downturned stem, which has a matching, slightly smaller and stepped expansion ring at its base, the precision and shaping of the two mirroring elements quite impressive. The stummel is dressed in a dark sandblast, elevating the handsome stacks of tight grain beneath. This piece fits quite comfortably in hand with plenty of room at the looping transition to wrap or rest a thumb.-Angela Robertson
