Lasse Skovgaard: Smooth Bent Egg

Product Number: 002-327-0712

Lasse Skovgaard began his pipe-making success as a young man of 18 at W.Ø. Larsen, where he carved the highly acclaimed Straight grain pieces before striking out on his own artistic career. In working at Larsen, he proceeded Teddy Knudsen and Jess Chonowitsch, who had helped promote the Danish school of design, which is also the style Skovgaard adopted.

This piece by the Danish carver is one of several bent Eggs seen within his portfolio. The shape itself is curvaceous and plump, which Skovgaard has expanded upon in this rendition. The gently rounded, pleasingly plump bowl offers a voluptuous feel in hand, while the concave rim further softens the form. A paneled heel accentuates the lower bowl's chubby cheeks and swings upward through the undercurve of the triangular, gestural, upticking shank. Sinuosity abounds in this handsome pipe, as the soft, precise line work further denotes a Danish influence. The shank end is met by the saddle stem's domed base, continuing the shaping rhythm already realized, all culminating in a striking profile. It's all dressed in a honey-blonde stain that elevates tall, feathery wisps of straight grain, with beautiful birdseye peppering the entire underside.
