Lasse Skovgaard: Smooth Bent Dublin with Horn and Bone

Product Number: 002-327-0722

Lasse Skovgaard's pipe-making career began as a young man of 18, when he went to work for W.Ø. Larsen, the venerated Copenhagen workshop where a plethora of fellow Danish carvers have either worked or for which they've designed. Skovgaard also learned quite a bit from his dad, Benni Jørgensen, as well as from Teddy Knudsen. He branched out on his own soon thereafter and began crafting pipes under his own name in 2004.

The Danish carver's portfolio runs the gamut from fairly conservative classics to more eclectic examples. This organic bent Dublin is a more refined piece, with the soft lines, and gentle curves predominantly associated with Danish classic design. The forward-leaning bowl flares from a lifting heel to the softly inflated, dome-like rim that's in turn demarcated by a wrapping ridgeline. An abbreviated shank begins a slight rise and is topped by a white band of bone, which is then eclipsed by an expansion disc made of horn, mirroring the color of the stylish, downturned stem.

Skovgaard's intuitive eye for shaping is clearly demonstrated in the shaping of this piece so that it emphasizes the grain orientation of the briar block. Gorgeous vertical grain rises in tandem with the flare of the bowl, while the slightly wavy, asymmetrical rim is beautifully peppered with birdseye large and small. This is an enchanting piece that's imbued with a minimalist aesthetic, yet there are numerous elements comprising the composition. It's certainly a testament to the artisan's prowess as a talented pipe maker.
