Lasse Skovgaard: Sandblasted Horn Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-327-0733
As the son of legendary Danish carver Benni Jørgensen, Lasse Skovgaard was born with pipe making in his blood. He started crafting pipes early in his life, and by the time he was 18, Skovgaard was working in the prestigious W.Ø. Larsen workshop. His raw skill and talent was honed during his time at the workshop, with his father and family friend Teddy Knudsen offering guidance as well. Skovgaard's work showcases a penchant for sleek, curvaceous designs that are imbued with the naturalistic qualities associated with the Danish tradition, and this Horn shape is a perfect example of his impeccable craftsmanship.
With a lifted heel and stretched, nearly seamless transition, this piece strikes the fluid, effortless profile associated with the form. The bowl possesses a floral-like appearance thanks to the broad rim and pronounced ridgelines that curl along fore and flanks. The ovoid shank flares gradually out back before giving way to saddle stem of jet-black vulcanite. The gentle lifting of the shank creates plenty of negative space between the bowl and shank face, allowing each facet of the design to be digested while also providing room for the thumb to rest. The stummel wears a striking, ruby-hued sandblast that accentuates the pipe's organic features and the natural grain orientation of the briar. The shank end is left smooth and stained a light color for a touch of visual and tactile diversity. It's a charming, affable design that will no doubt become a favorite among any collector's rotation.
