Lasse Skovgaard: Smooth Bent Dublin Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-327-0789

The son of renowned artisan Benni Jørgensen, Skovgaard has pipe making in his blood, starting with W.Ø. Larsen at 16 where he made tampers and carved pipes in his spare time to practice the art. Eventually, he began to meet the exacting standards of both Larsen and his father, moving on to make pipes for the Danish workshop at 18 and rising swiftly to begin crafting their coveted Straight Grain pieces at 19 years old. After being urged by family friend Teddy Knudsen, Skovgaard began carving his own pipes, taking a small selection to the Chicago Pipe Show and selling out two years in a row, starting his career as an artisan carver.

This bent Dublin isn't really a lengthy piece from Skovgaard, though it appears as one of his longest in profile, all thanks to the strikingly extended stretch of shank which immediately draws the eye. Though the bowl is proportionately stout in comparison, the shank here holds a good deal of the visual weight solely by virtue of its dramatic elongation. The shank itself takes on an extremely gradual upward curve, working in tandem with an understated flare through the flanks which slowly expands into an ovoid shape as the shank reaches toward a trim, demurely curved saddle stem of jet-black vulcanite. The fluid gesture of the shank and stem here easily balance the presence of the bowl, with the shank's lengthy, gentle undercurve introducing a touch of momentum which stylistically lifts the bowl. Said bowl stands atop a rounded, sweeping heel that swiftly angles outward to form a jutting fore wall, one that boasts a good deal of comfortable curvature for the hand to appreciate. The walls here take on a measured flare out to a broad, domed rim that's chamfered into the chamber, completing a truly unique profile that is sure to be a valued piece in any collection. Dressed in a light, rich stain, the stummel here showcases smoky flickers of flame grain surrounding the bowl and following the flanks of the shank, while the rim and underside are peppered with birdseye.
