Lasse Skovgaard: Smooth Acorn Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-327-0813
As the son of Benni Jørgensen, Lasse Skovgaard could be said to have pipe making in his blood, but this isn't just a case of inherited talent. At the age of 16, Skovgaard began working at the esteemed W.Ø. Larsen workshop and quickly graduated from producing tampers to fashioning pipes with the other carvers. He refined his skills and talents over time with the help of his father and the great Teddy Knudsen, and in 2004, he started making artisan pipes under his own name. He quickly garnered international success and is now considered one of Denmark's primer carvers.
A dynamic, eye-catching composition, this piece sees a tall, plump bowl posed at the fore of a sweeping ovoid shank and a steeply curved saddle stem, the latter of which promotes a comfortable smoking posture. The bowl flares from its lifted heel to its flared, rounded rim, and as it does, it take on a forward cant that imbues the totality of the shape with an active appearance in profile. Crisp ridgelines along the shank's sides lend a touch of structure to the otherwise curvaceous form, while the shank itself extends through the transition and provides support to the bowl's heel. Comfortable in hand and clenched between the teeth, this piece is further elevated by a warm, contrast-stained smooth finish that highlights impeccable flame grain along the bowl's flanks.
