Suhr: Smooth Brandy with Bamboo
Product Number: 002-821-0012
The Suhr name dates back to 1940s Denmark, specifically to a pipe repair shop of the same name that later became a manufacturer, employing the likes of Sixten Ivarsson and Poul Rasmussen. Johannes Rasmussen, the grandson of Poul and Annie Julie, now continues that pipemaking legacy in his artisan pipes. Having learned from Tom Eltang, who, coincidentally, trained under Anne Julie at the onset of his career, Johaness' shaping, engineering, and bit work bespeak an impressive degree of craftsmanship, excelling in construction and shaping.
This Brandy falls well within Danish design conventions, displaying the supple curves and elegant lines characteristic of Danish pipemaking. Much of this is realized at the bowl, which features a balanced forward cant and delights in its rounded taper toward the rim. Comparatively, the bowl is quite tall compared to the slender shank and stem combination, seemingly perched upon the svelte transition. The shank, then, is extended by two knuckles of bamboo, a common accenting medium within Danish pipemaking, and Johannes has incorporated it tastefully — the rhythm of the knuckles continued by the base of the saddle stem, urging the eyes toward the visually dominant bowl. For those drawn to Danish-style pipes, this piece excels at capturing that aesthetic, commended further by quality engineering and a stunning cross grain pattern underneath an attractively traditional, ruby-tinged contrast stain.-Truett Smith
