Suhr: Sandblasted Acorn with Horn
Product Number: 002-821-0016
Johannes Rasmussen's portfolio is dominated by Rhodesian, Egg, and Dublin renditions, and this is the first Acorn design we've received from the Danish carver. The grandson of Anne Julie and Poul Rasmussen, Johannes comes from a talented pipemaking family and works closely with Tom Eltang — most notably on the Sara Eltang line. As such, the young Rasmussen's design style hews closely to traditional Danish shapes and stylistic elements, personified here in this piece. The gesture of the shank and stem is curved diminutively, with most of the pipe's bend coming from the angle of the transition. The streamlined shaping flows naturally forward to inform the bowl's forward cant and lend it further prominence in profile. Neatly canted, broadly flared, and with a subtle but high-set waistline and pointed heel, it's a typical rendering of the Acorn form, and the finish especially bespeaks its Danish inspiration: the dark, low-depth sandblast accented by a lighter, smooth-polished rim and the stem commended by a horn accent at the base — an oft-seen material used in Danish pipemaking.-Truett Smith
