Suhr: Sandblasted Dublin with Boxwood
Product Number: 002-821-0017
Johannes Rasmussen, the man behind Suhr pipes, learned much of the pipemaking craft from Tom Eltang at the beginning of his career. Coincidentally, Tom spent time at the onset of his own career training under Anne Julie, Johannes' grandmother — coming full circle as Rasmussen sought out Tom as a mentor. Likewise, the use of the Suhr name follows tradition, hearkening back to a 1940s pipe repair shop and manufacturer that employed both Sixten Ivarsson and Johannes' grandfather, Poul Rasmussen.
In this piece, Johannes presents a striking take on the straight Dublin. It's similar to other renditions we've seen from the Danish carver, with its poised, flaring bowl and oval shank; however, in this piece, Rasmussen has focused on a disparate sense of the proportions — the bowl dominating the visual weight and appearing even taller in contrast to the exceptionally trim shank and stem. The shank is of almost pencil shank sleekness, being compressed above and below to further accentuate the piece's streamlined nature in profile. Such a shaping cue draws the eyes forward to the bowl which rises tall and proud to a gently rounded rim. Said rim is, then, contrast stained in a light, auburn hue, accenting the dark sandblast of the stummel for a traditionally Danish aesthetic. That lighter hue is echoed in a trim ring of smooth-polished briar at the shank end before being accented by a broader band of striking, yellow-tinged boxwood at the stem base.-Truett Smith
