Suhr: Smooth Bent Egg with Horn
Product Number: 002-821-0021
Johannes Rasmussen, the artisan behind Suhr pipes, is the grandson of Poul Rasmussen, a contemporary of Sixten Ivarsson. Johannes here presents a smooth Egg, the bowl rising in near independence from the tight transition with good cheeking and a vertical aspect that separates it visually from the shank. The heel is lifting and the curvature smooth and natural, with vertical grain following those curves and rising up the bowl in dense striations.
A pronounced element here is the horn shank extension, which alternates creamy tones of beige with darker coloration along its beautifully grained surface to terminate in a flaring dome fitted with a brass reinforcement ring to protect it from the pressure of the stem. From there, a diminutive, tapered stem reaches to the lip button with just a whisper of downward turn. These are all elements that are often seen in artisan pipe making, but when executed to this level of workmanship, they elevate the overall design. It's a remarkable rendition, immensely comfortable in hand and satisfying to view.- Chuck Stanion
