Tao: Smooth Bulldog with Antique Whale Tooth and Silver

Product Number: 002-748-0017

A sleek, stocky Bulldog shape, this fellow is very much of the more classically Tao Nielsen ilk, being sturdy and muscular, yet still exhibiting a sense of softness, especially about the bowl. Said bowl sports a subtle touch of forward cant, seemingly emphasized by the tight, vibrant flame at play toward the heel. The broad, practically inflated rim is geometrically balanced by a pair of tighter, slimming facets at the underside, serving to guide the eye to the seriously crisp-lined diamond shank.

It's finished in one of the Danish carver's brilliantly light, honey-blonde finishes, highlighting a spread of feathery flame and birdseye all around. He's opted to pair it to a handsome composite stem of not-often-seen bowling ball-style cumberland, briar, acrylic, and antique whale tooth, along with one of his refined sterling silver butterfly accents. The resulting composition is one of beauty and prestige, likewise hearkening to the carver's history with the sea. A truly spectacular briar.

*While the harvesting of whales is most often thought of in terms of the once widespread whaling industry, small-scale, localized whale hunts have been central to Faroese life since the North Atlantic islands were settled by the Norse, circa 800 A.D. With a climate and soil wholly unsuited to supporting life by farming crops, those who lived on the Faroe Islands learned to subsist upon pilot whale, sheep, seabirds, and fish. The rich meat and blubber of the pilot whale was (and still is) the most important, the annual catch to this day being divided communally then stored, prepared or preserved in Faorese households (in other words, you won't find it in a Faroe Islands supermarket, nor do they export any of it).
