Tao: Smooth Bulldog with Antique Whale Tooth and Silver
Product Number: 002-748-0019
Easily recognizable as the work of Jens "Tao" Nielsen, this Bulldog is compact, stout, and hearty of proportions, the crisp facets of the shank and hard beadline around the bowl adding further firmness to the composition and contrasting against the rounded, dome-like rim up top. It fits in well to Nielsen's portfolio of compact, muscular Danish classic renditions, yet this one is a touch taller and more tapered of heel than other Bulldog iterations we've seen from the Danish artisan.
Its boldness gives way to a more angular aesthetic when turned to view head-on. The tapered panels forming the bowl's heel are especially high-set in origin, coming to a point below and making for a triangular-shaped fore that resembles a streamlined boat's prow and keel. Such symbolism is quite fitting as Tao was originally a sailor by trade, and it matches perfectly with the accent of antique whale tooth at the stem base, complemented by amber-hued acrylic, warm cumberland, and ebonite to create a stem of multiple visual textures and patterns. Lastly, it's all dressed in a gorgeous, gala apple-like contrast stain, a sterling silver butterfly emblazoned on the bowl just above the transition. Immaculate.-Truett Smith
*While the harvesting of whales is most often thought of in terms of the once widespread whaling industry, small-scale, localized whale hunts have been central to Faroese life since the North Atlantic islands were settled by the Norse, circa 800 A.D. With a climate and soil wholly unsuited to supporting life by farming crops, those who lived on the Faroe Islands learned to subsist upon pilot whale, sheep, seabirds, and fish. The rich meat and blubber of the pilot whale was (and still is) the most important, the annual catch to this day being divided communally then stored, prepared or preserved in Faorese households (in other words, you won't find it in a Faroe Islands supermarket, nor do they export any of it).
