Tao: Smooth Squat Bulldog with Antique Whale Tooth
Product Number: 002-748-0022
While the other Bulldog in this same batch of Tao Nielsen pipes is certainly impressive, and likewise quite characteristic of the carver's work, I'd say this Squat Bulldog is even moreso. It's overtly stocky, not to mention quite sturdy, and the faceted, streamlined disposition seems to call to mind the look of Ilsted's well-known style.
As for the finish, it's a gorgeous red walnut contrast, highlighting some stellar grain, with an entire upper region packed with birdseye, bolstered by nothing but tight flame below. The crisp diamond shank guides the eye effortlessly to a broad saddle bit, fashioned from a combination of bowling ball-style cumberland and a diagonally-oriented accent of genuine antique whale tooth. A splendid piece from Tao.- Daniel Bumgardner
*While the harvesting of whales is most often thought of in terms of the once widespread whaling industry, small-scale, localized whale hunts have been central to Faroese life since the North Atlantic islands were settled by the Norse, circa 800 A.D. With a climate and soil wholly unsuited to supporting life by farming crops, those who lived on the Faroe Islands learned to subsist upon pilot whale, sheep, seabirds, and fish. The rich meat and blubber of the pilot whale was (and still is) the most important, the annual catch to this day being divided communally then stored, prepared or preserved in Faorese households (in other words, you won't find it in a Faroe Islands supermarket, nor do they export any of it).
