Tao: Smooth Bulldog with Antique Whale Tooth Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-748-0026

The Bulldog is a shape that inserts itself naturally into the portfolio of Jens "Tao" Nielsen, who gravitates to the masculine and muscular shaping cues appropriate for a carver who spent a good portion of his early life at sea. Tao began the landlubber portion of his journey clerking in a pipe shop, then moving on to work with Erik Nording. He and Poul Ilsted soon left Nording to start their own factory, making Svendborg pipes. In this pipe, it's easy to see the influence each had on the other, as both excel with facets, crisp, precise edging, and geometrically accurate paneling.

The shank is proportionately long in comparison to the relatively squat and rounded bowl, but maintains an abbreviated impression when joined by the very short and dramatically tapered stem, at the base of which is a layered accent, one layer being made of antique whale tooth that imbues the piece with a nod to the seafaring of Tao's previous profession as a seaman. The rim is rounded and domed, separated from the taper of the bowl by two crisp, dark beadlines. A sharp, firm heel adds to the muscularity of the piece, and the coloration differentiates the tight strands of vertical grain that climb the bowl and highlights the birdseye at the top. At under four-and-a-quarter inches of length, this piece is eminently practical, able to be pocket carried yet projecting a sturdy disposition.
