Todd Johnson: Smooth Bent Dublin with Boxwood (Phalanx) (Q)
Product Number: 002-194-0089
Out of the four briars we're presenting in today's update of Todd Johnson pipes, this bent Dublin perhaps speaks to the artisan's Danish influences more than any other. The subtle lifting gesture of the heel, the sweeping transition and arcing line of the underside, the Ivarsson-esque teardrop line along the right flank, the undulating, plateau-crowned rim... all these elements show a mastery of functionalist design, an organic beauty realized through minimalism. But Todd didn't just settle for imitation.
He's honed and developed his own unique style in the 17+ years he's been making pipes, taking Danish classic or neo-classical base forms and imbuing them with a more Industrial sense of line and stance. We can see those cues here in the more upright posture of the bowl, particularly in the lines of the aft, as well as the treatment of the shank end and stem base — those clean circles and lines serving as a contrast of sorts to the more organic bowl form. The end result is bold and powerful in its overall stance, stout and muscular in its supporting walls and proportions, yet elegant and minimalist of line in profile. Or in simpler terms... a beautiful example of just why Todd's name has become so synonymous with the American pipe making scene. Recommended.- Andrew Wike
