A truly exceptional piece from Todd Johnson, this Phalanx Q grade not only sports beautiful grain from end to end but some of the most balanced and well-executed shaping we've seen from the American carver. The high-set, softly rounded waistline of the bowl, for example, keeps the overall silhouette supple and inviting, its smooth contours matched by the domed stem base at the end of its long, slightly flaring shank. Moreover, while the shape itself is quite elongated, Todd's still managed to keep it a stable sitter, resting along a flattened plane at the heel with the extra weight of the shank balanced out by the strong forward cant of the bowl. He's kept all that beautiful shaping and stunning grain in full focus, too, the only accent to the piece being a thin wafer of camel bone inlaid into the stem base. Excellent work.
