Todd Johnson: Sandblasted Matador (Hoplite) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-194-0099

Todd Johnson's sitter shapes are always impressive, sacrificing neither dynamism, nor gesture, nor complexity for their ability to balance on a flat surface. His signature Matador design is an excellent example of that aesthetic and technical equilibrium, featuring a strong forward cant and a concave bevel to the fore, which, together with the upward-arcing shank, work to imply a strong leaning gesture in profile — indeed calling to mind the look of a matador taunting a bull to charge. This Hoplite grade iteration is a beautiful example of exactly that style, emphasizing that gesture even more though the use of a craggy plateau crown and a dark, silhouette-enhancing sandblast. Fitting to the dynamic nature of the shape, Todd's presented this one sans any sort of flashy accents or adornments, keeping the focus on the design's lines and excellent grain.
