Todd Johnson: Sandblasted Long Shank Samurai Volcano Tobacco Pipe

I'm a fan of Todd Johnson's Samurai Volcano, its complex shape striking a balance between the classic shape upon which it is based — the Volcano itself a shape replete with organicism — as well as a cresting wave motion that feels pulled straight from the Japanese aesthetic. The result is a shape that is sturdy, but replete with details, from the patch of plateau at the base, to a slight asymmetry, allowing the shank to curve ever-so-slightly to the right when viewed from above. And as far as finish, Todd made no mistake in choosing this dark stain and sandblast combination; it brings out neatly-stacked growth rings from rim to base, for an undeniable texture in hand. Beautiful work all around.
