Todd Johnson: Sandblasted Bent Apple with Aluminum (Hoplite) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-194-0101
One of Todd's more muscular pieces, this charmingly stout and chubby bent Apple really showcases Johnson's striking American industrial aesthetic. The firm lines of the shank and the domed stem base, for example, work with the softer Danish curves and heavier proportions of the bowl to create a very powerful stance in profile, with plenty of bundled up, implied potential energy to boot — something echoed in the unique accent stem it wears. A nod to the mid-century Streamline Moderne aesthetic, Todd's paired the briar's understated tanblast with a split stem mouthpiece of bright aluminum for the base and jet-black vulcanite for the longer bit. It all comes together beautifully, a fusion of serious substance and more playful aesthetics — not to mention some downright impressive ring grain as well. Recommended.
