Todd Johnson: Sandblasted Blowfish with Bakelite (Hoplite) Tobacco Pipe

A more stout and forthright sort of Blowfish here, this fellow from Todd Johnson keeps things meatily balanced, though not without exhibiting some very lively gesture. Indeed, foregoing his most recent penchant for streamlined, almost modernist renditions, the American carver has here presented us with a take on the form that stays quite faithful to the spirit of the Japanese archetype. It wears a healthy amount of balanced, organic asymmetry, and the fluid line at the underside travels gracefully to meet its rearward sweeping shank. And for a bit of added color without disrupting its organic style, Todd's lent it a composite stem of green and blue bakelite, complemented by the same colors of stain on his stamping. Cool stuff.
