Todd Johnson: Sandblasted Acorn with 24K Leaf (Hoplite) Tobacco Pipe

Plump of rim, with a sleek taper and lean, slightly-flaring shank, this is one of Todd Johnson's iconic Acorn designs. Normally, that would be as much as was needed — a well-executed shape, and a fine finish — but in this case, Todd has gone many steps further. The stummel was sandblasted, tight and crisp, for texture. Then, with help from Scott Tinker, he sourced 24K gold leaf from Florence, Italy, who have been making the material since 1820. With a fine-tipped brush, the leaf was layered on, with even the environment carefully monitored — the leaf is so fine, that the slightest movement of air can send it flying. The entire process took about two weeks to finish completely, each of the three layers of leaf requiring a significant drying time. The result? A jewel of a pipe, its texture and glint able to catch the light in ways that simple stains can never manage.
