Todd Johnson: Sandblasted Tomato with Bakelite (Hoplite) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-194-0118
It's almost hard to believe that the carver who only recently presented us with both a pipe finished in 24k gold leaf, as well as a Nautilus rendered from the shell of an actual Nautilus could also fashion this Tomato. Well, it's not hard to believe that he could; just that he does, and does it so damn well. Soft-lined and plump with some clear influence from the Danish school in its softly lifting heel and gently inflated rim, this briar is streamlined, yet playful with no shortage of implied energy. Todd's opted for a dark sandblast, throwing focus to the organic curvature of the shape itself, while also lending more spotlight to the vibrant green bakelite stem at play out back. With its domed base, the stem echoes the playful roundness initiated up front, bringing a more geometrically unified look to the piece in profile. A comforting, undeniably impressive smoker from Todd Johnson.- Daniel Bumgardner
