Todd Johnson: Rusticated Natural Bent Egg (Hoplite)
Product Number: 002-194-0128
Though Todd Johnson is a remarkably versatile carver who tends to gravitate toward organically inclined designs, the bent Egg is a shape we don't frequently see from the American artisan. In fact, the last time we received one from Todd was just slightly over 10 years ago. However, judging from this particular offering, that long wait certainly paid off since Johnson has crafted a magnificent rendition. It's a rather Danish inspired take on the shape as evidenced by its supple curves, smooth flowing lines, and the domed base of the elegantly downturned saddle stem. All of these factors are commonly seen throughout Todd's vast portfolio, demonstrating his deep respect for classic Danish design cues and the massive impact legendary carvers such Tom Eltang and Lars Ivarsson had on his own personal style. The American carver even apprenticed under Eltang back in the winter of 2001, learning how to precisely shape and drill a briar block while also maximizing its grain potential.
The forward urging, gestural bowl curls upward from out of the thick, hearty shank with the rim nearly coming to a slight point along the fore. Said bowl conforms exceptionally well to wrapped fingers, the slightly elongated transition also serving as a comfortable thumb rest. And with the unbelievably precise and detailed rustication this pipe wears, it's one you'll frequently be reaching for in your collection. The rippling rustication emulates the wavy ring grain found on sandblasted pipes, offering an abundance of crisp texture that will continually leave your fingers and eyes mesmerized. The rim is oriented at a backward cant and left smooth for a hint of contrast, matching the band of smooth briar along the shank end. All of that rich texture is enhanced further by the stummel's natural stain, which will also gradually darken over time as it develops a patina, reflecting each bowl that's enjoyed inside of it.- Jeffery Sitts
