Hiroyuki Tokutomi: Smooth Pot with Bamboo (Hiro) (with Tamper and Stand)
Product Number: 002-141-1157
Though not sold as a two-pipe set, this Tomato from Hiroyuki Tokutomi was fashioned in tandem with another, matching pipe — both accented with bamboo and coming complete with driftwood stands and boxwood tampers. They exemplify the legendary Japanese artisan's artful approach to pipe making, considering all elements as part of the pipe's artistic composition and, in this case, adding a stand and tamper to that composition.
Accented with bamboo and elevated by asymmetrical shaping, this Pot rendition employs a number of Hiroyuki's conventional design cues. The bowl, while overall quite traditional shaped, is topped by a wavy, undulating rim, following the grain patterns and plateau orientation for visual movement and organic charm. Behind, then, the shank is extended to near Churchwarden length by a seven-knuckled section of dark bamboo. While bamboo of this length isn't hard to come by, what is rare is a section of this length that remains straight and also displays evenly spaced knuckles. When not searching for wild, eccentric bamboo piece, pipe makers typically prefer sections such as this, with the longer, more evenly spaced portions few and far between. Not only are the knuckles evenly spaced, adding balanced rhythm to the design, but the entire section gradually tapers toward the bowl, lending the form momentum and drawing the eye forward. As a result, the transition is quite slender and suddenly flares into the bowl, as if the bowl is inflated out of the bamboo, much like a molten bulb on the end of a glassblower's rod as it's deftly crafted. It's all finished in a smooth, auburn stain for vivid grain definition, and the stain is complemented by the color of the driftwood stand, while the boxwood tamper matches the lighter hues of dark bamboo for visual balance and cohesion. Lastly, this piece received Toku's "Hiro" stamp, designating the Japanese master's highest grade.-Truett Smith
