Hiroyuki Tokutomi: Sandblasted Squat Tomato (One Snail)

Product Number: 002-141-1070

For the third time now we've seen a Tomato like this from Tokutomi. However, at first glance, the shape is most unlike what we've come to associate with the carver. The thick, chubby lines, the rotund bowl, fat, short shank and short stem are all elements that one would not normally expect from Tokutomi. Not even a little bit. Yet here we are again. Clearly Toku continues to experiment with this form, a notion that is very true to Tokutomi's work. So much of what he does is centered around pushing the boundaries of his own vocabulary, as he is constantly redefining, as well as refining, his voice and individual aesthetic as a pipe maker. Although the piece may be 'unusual' for Toku, what's not unorthodox is to find a series of experiments in his breadth of work. Moreover, it's not uncommon that a pipe by Tokutomi should be splendid in every regard despite it's yet anomalous place in his canon of work. This is obviously the case here.
