Tonni Nielsen: Smooth Nautilus (Viking) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-192-0291
The Nautilus, being an inherently organic form, is, to me, one of the hardest to pull off. By that I mean it's easier said than done for a host of reasons. First, the curling tail that connects with the back of the bowl requires sculpting and sanding that have to be done by hand. The next challenge is to successfully strike that perfect balance between just organic enough, and not too wild. With this example Tonni has managed to keep the bowl tightly-knit, and the lines soft, while adding just a touch of undulation to the rim to remind us that the inspiration for this shape is natural and thus imperfect (re: not symmetric). What's even more impressive is the way he has managed to follow the grain; there's plenty of fine flame gracing both sides of this mollusk. The combination of shape and grain here absolutely called for his pinnacle grade: the famous Viking stamp.
