Tonni Nielsen: Smooth Pheasant with Bone (Viking) Tobacco Pipe

Tonni Nielsen says he takes his design cues from nature, and that is abundantly clear with this pipe. A signature shape from Tonni, the Pheasant offers smooth, organic curves, a forward canted Egg-like bowl, and a low transition that places the emphasis on the bowl itself. The decorative bone fitment is not from Viking bone. Viking is the grade only; no Vikings were harmed in the production of this pipe. The Viking grade symbolizes Tonni's move from Denmark to the United States in 1982. Grain is consistent around the bowl, which sports a dark walnut stain. The undulating rim provides a bit a asymmetrical interest, lending the piece an even more organic appearance. The proportions are most interesting, with the bowl taking most of the visual weight even without being oversized. Tonni Nielsen's contribution to pipe design is irrefutable, and this piece proves the rule.
