Tonni Nielsen: Smooth Bent Dublin
Product Number: 002-192-0300
While in profile this bent Dublin may seem to follow a singular, tapering and swooping S-curve curve from rim to bit, Tonni has actually played with some striking asymmetry here — creating a sharp teardrop line along the underside, beginning just past the shank end and flowing up to the left flank of the bowl's fore. It's a subtle, minimalist touch, no doubt, but the effect it produces simply makes the pipe, reinforcing the piece's gestural, tapering silhouette while adding just the right touch of tactile stimulation in hand.
Of course, there's just as much to appreciate about the overall grain pattern and finish here — Tonni having lent the stummel a darker style of contrast stain, allowing the broader licks of the briar's flame grain to really stand out without distracting from the expert shaping. What's more, Tonni's accented this piece with quite an interesting style of composite mouthpiece, the stem base itself being crafted from jet-black vulcanite with an amber-colored bit inset into its domed design. This "faux amber" material is neither amber nor acrylic, but a special, hand-cast polymer that served as an amber substitute years ago. Tonni, along with a handful of other Danish pipe makers, still have a limited stock of the unique, crackled material, and employ it sparingly on select designs. Excellent piece!
