Tonni Nielsen: Smooth Bent Brandy
Product Number: 002-192-0306
When it comes to his bent Brandy shapes, Tonni Nielsen typically goes for designs with a good bit of height — those loftier interpretations being better suited to showcasing the Danish approach's handling of the classic form's low-set, broad waistline and long, soft taper. In this particular rendition, however, we find a much squatter take on the shape, almost Apple-like in its overall rotundity and curvature. The waistline is still positioned quite low, though, with careful attention paid to the cheeking of the flanks around the transition — which in turn works to emphasize the form's taper up to the rim, without actually having to draw it out to great heights. All of that is, of course, accentuated even further through the contrast created by the low-profile oval shank and stem configuration, lending even more visual weight to the bowl itself.
All in all, I quite like the direction Tonni took with this briar. It's a beautiful take on the classic shape, offering a comfortable feel in hand despite still being light enough to clench with ease. And as with all of Tonni's designs, you can expect some seriously impressive grain — brought out here by a warm, glossy contrast finish.
