Tonni Nielsen: Smooth Asymmetric Dublin Sitter with Black and White Ebony
Product Number: 002-192-0332
In this piece, Tonni Nielsen presents us with a bent Dublin that seems to defy physics. The bowl tapers dramatically to a flattened heel which enables the piece to sit upright, despite the diminutive surface area of the foot and the tilted balance the piece maintains. When seated the piece's inherent asymmetry becomes readily apparent: As the bowl flares into the inflated rim, it also curls slightly to the left when viewed from the smoker's perspective, matched by the angle of the shank and stem. In profile, then, the transition is poised above the bowl's equator accentuating the piece's momentum, which is furthered by the triangular shank's gradual flare toward the shank end. Lastly, Nielsen has fashioned the stem base from black and white ebony wood, the natural grain echoing the dark tones of the flame grain-highlighting contrast stain of the stummel.-Truett Smith
